Understand Healthy Urination

Healthy urination is characterized by a comfortable and regular process without discomfort, urgency, or excessive frequency. Maintaining good habits while urinating is important not only for overall comfort but also for pelvic health.

DON't

1. Hold it

Ignoring the urge to pee can stretch the bladder over time and lead to urinary retention, incontinence, or bladder infection.

2. Push It

Forcing your urine out, or “pushing it,” can lead to issues like weakened pelvic floor muscles and urinary incontinence over time. Instead, it’s healthier to let your bladder empty naturally, ensuring a smooth and controlled flow.

3. Forget to drink.

Drink plenty of water throughout the day to ensure proper urine dilution and prevent bladder irritation. If your urine is clear or very light, that’s a sign you are drinking the right amount of water. If your urine is dark yellow or amber, that’s usually a sign of dehydration.

4. Go “just in case”

Regularly going to the restroom without a real urge can train the bladder to be overly sensitive, leading to increased frequency.

5. Wipe back to front

It can introduce bacteria from the anus into the urethra, which can lead to urinary tract infections (UTIs). Women are especially prone to this because the urethra is shorter and closer to the anus compared to men. Always better to go front to back for cleaner, safer results.

6. Neglect Kegel (who?)

Kegel are exercises that involve contracting and relaxing the pelvic floor muscles, which support the bladder, uterus, and bowels. Named after Dr. Arnold Kegel, who developed them, these exercises can help improve bladder control and enhance sexual health. Just don’t do that while peeing, you are disrupting the flow which can teach your bladder to empty partially, leading to a start/stop urine stream that’s out of your control.

Consultation

If you experience excessive or painful urination, it is important to consult a healthcare provider for proper evaluation and treatment.

Conclusion

Practicing healthy urination habits is vital for maintaining pelvic health and overall well-being. By being mindful of the common mistakes, and following the golden rules, you can take proactive steps toward better urinary health.
