What
The sum of physical and emotional symptoms women (about 90%) may experience before the start of their period (~10days). When those symptoms are debilitating, it is called PMDD premenstrual dysphoric disorder.
Symptoms
PMS symptoms can vary greatly for every woman and change throughout their life. They can be: – physical: cramping, bloating, tiredness, tender breasts, diarrhea, headache, fluid retention… – emotional: irritability, insomnia, food cravings, depression, mood swings, change in libido, poor concentration In case of PMDD, the symptoms are intense enough to disrupt with personal life and daily activities.
Cause
To this day, we don’t know exactly what causes PMS but changes in hormone levels could be part of the answer. Research is needed to create that knowledge.
Diagnostic & solutions
To this day, no single test exists to identify PMS this is why we encourage every woman to write down those symptoms, their intensity, occurrence so you can recognize patterns and make lifestyle adjustments (RDL period tracker). The obvious is to get enough sleep, eat healthy foods and exercise even if just lightly. You might also check with your doctor if supplements such as Magnesium, Calcium and Vitamin B6 can be beneficial to you. If your symptoms prevent you from carrying-out daily activities, call you healthcare practitioner.
